Almost a week since my last post. Probably a good thing. I posted what was supposed to be a short comment on a discussion group today and it turned into a rant. Then I tried to explain myself and another rant started up. Nothing wrong with a good rant, but I like to plan my rants a bit better. Yes, I know the contradictions there but trying to explain myself would be another rant.

So instead I'll rave. If you are at all interested in the Monteiths Wild Food Challenge, I really seriously recommend you have a look at what Dockside is offering. Actually, don't look taste, the description is nothing special but the execution is just stunningly good - Roasted Thar to die for.

Oh and have a look at the menu for the first restaurant on that link - yep the main is half a pig's head. And yes, we tried it too. Pretty much as gross as it sounds, and yet sort of compelling too. Friends of my sister regularly dine at a "nose to tail" restaurant. Strangely she does not join them.

I can heartily recommend the Beijing Duck at Coyote. A decent amount of greenery too.

Am looking forward to reading the rants. The whole topic is pissing me off.

Yeah - me too. Although it is quite possibly for different reasons.

I like and support your rants.
When members of the board of SFFANZ can't be bothered to nominate! Pfaugh!!!

Yeah, but why aren't they nominating? Is it because they (we) are an apathetic bunch or is it because there is something wrong with the category making people lose interest in it?

Personally I think the whole category is deeply flawed and that accounts for why hardly anybody nominates. The rant was because the discussion focus was becoming very detailed without addressing the big issue.

(Not that this is the place to re-litigate that)

I've noticed that fans generally aren't nominating, and not just in the services categories. The professional side of the awards is going great guns, but the amateur side is withering on the vine. I have tried to lead by example, but there are limits.

To illustrate part of the problem: the writers group has been told on numerous occaisions of the awards and been encouraged to nominate - and nothing has come of it. When one of their number was nominated for writing she vacillated about accepting because she wasn't sure she was good enough.

Personally, I'll give the fan side another two years and if there is no improvement I will move at the AGM that they be abolished.

Well you and I both have our fan awards now so we don't need them amymore do we? ;-)

We could as an intermediate step consoliate the fan categories into a single fan performance category - with a suitable strong description of all suitable material and submission guidelines. Even if it means having an apples vs concrete blocks situation it might work. We can discuss over a beer sometime.
