From the local Maungaraki newsletter I see that the little hardware store in the local shopping area is closing down. I'm sorry to see it going. The owner has been very helpful when I have had questions and at times has even had stuff that the big discount store can't provide. The premises are being taken over by an outfit that does self publishing. I was intrigued to read this quote in the article "The stigma of self-publishing doesn't exist". Really?!

They also offer ghost writing services.

Yes I have managed to do a few things. But the familiarity is there because there are a whole heap of failures you haven't heard about. Most of which are failures to start. I have a room full of stuff I have bought and then haven't used. Which is why I was so proud the other day when I used some of it for a purpose not originally intended.

There is a whole lot of personal analysis possible here for me if I wanted to get into it. All based around how incredibly practical my father was and therefore how useless I am in comparison. Not actually that big a deal but there nevertheless.

Same as me. Practical father and practical older sister. I used to think that it was because they were so very practicla that I never got a chance to experiment as kid. I expected things to come out perfectly with no effort, just as they did for my father. Or my sister would take over when I started fumbling and she would finish it.

These days I tend to think my mind just doesn't work that way. I can work out three different plot solutions for a given fiction problem and I can do historical analysis of almost anything, but I can't translate a set of intructions into something that works three dimensionally. I might have been better with more room to make mistakes as a kid, but I would not have ever been able to do the projects my mind yearns over.

Good point. I didn't get much chance to experiment when I was younger either so I'm only learning my limitations now.
