The regional winner of the Monteiths' Wild Food challenge was Mange-Tout in Lower Hutt. Simon organised an outing tonight for a group of five.

Despite living there, its easy to forget that the Hutt has a pretty interesting restaurant scene. It may not be obvious. Mange-Tout looks like a very ordinary lunch café in a scruffy old arcade, complete with sandwich display case and plastic furniture. And you know you aren't in Kansas anymore when the waitress greets you with "hello my darlings" before gushing about the specials. But then you read the menu and you know its going to be a serious dining experience.

The menu had lots of interesting things on it, but we were focussed on the special items for the Wild Food Challenge and so we all had the smoked eel followed by the wallaby dish. Really nice. You can see why they won the prize. There was even room for dessert which was also very nice (yes, I know there is always room for dessert).

But was it worth missing the All Blacks beat the Wallabies? I'd have to say a big yes. Even if my decoder decided to reset itself and I didn't get the game on tape, it was still well worth it.
