Unpatriotic
Dec. 14th, 2005 01:16 pmI really am a grumpy old curmudgeon at times*. Especially times like today when a significant proportion of Wellington's population are getting all excited over the local premiere of King Kong. Closed streets, red carpet, celebrities parading - that sort of thing. And all the hype that has been going on for weeks leading up to it. It just makes me tired.
It didn't worry me with LOTR. To me that was an important film and an important showcase for the city. I just can't attach any such importance to Kong. Regardless of how well executed, it is still a dumb story about a big ape being mistreated. I have seem both previous versions and there is nothing in the story to interest me and I don't get off on flashy special effects.
I put it all down to collective mass hysteria. Any sociologists wanting to see it all in action can look at http://citylink.co.nz/services/webcam/courtenay/
(*there are people who would say that those times are any day with a "y" in it. I wouldn't want to argue with that assessment).
