It is a relatively rare occasions when I play an action PC or console game. Rare because I pretty much suck at them - it gets depressing when you can't get past the first couple of levels. This is perhaps why it has taken me so long to notice that I do better when I leave the sound turned up. Most of the time I leave it turned down so I can listen to music at the same time or even have the TV on in the background. It must be that having the sound of the game on helps immerse me in the game and not get distracted. The more immersed, the higher the concentration level, the better the performance.

I need to ponder the implications of this in a more general sense. I can multi task and actually prefer it (take that gender stereotyping!). But does it affect peak level performance when I need it? Then again, how often do I need to perform at peak? Is that a problem in itself?
