It is official - I have moved. For years I lived in Normandale, but now I live in Maungaraki. Very easy it was too - no actual physical translation required at all. It has been on the cards for some time because Telecom have been listing my place and other houses at this end of the street as being part of Maungaraki. But all the other institutions I dealt with considered me part of Normandale. But today I got my new postcode from NZ Post and they have my address as Maungaraki. So I guess that is that.

Average house prices are higher in Maungaraki than in Normandale - I wonder if my property value has gone up.

For the technically inclined, I can report that my street, which only has about 200 properties on it, is split amongst an astonishing eight different mesh blocks. For some reason, two of those mesh blocks are now coded by NZ Post as part of Maungareki rather than Normandale. These two mesh blocks would appear to span the natural boundary between the two suburbs - a ridge. Sloppy work on the part of the Stats department to my way of thinking as the population characteristics change noticibly as you cross the ridge.

Life would be much easier for us mapmakers if they tried to get it right.

I bet. For what its worth, I will go on telling people I live in Normandale - it is an older area with a better developed sense of identity & community.
