So there I was reading The year's Best SF 11 edited by David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer. I like this collection for a couple of reasons. First it has the focus of just being a Science Fiction collection. There are lots of other forms and labels in the wider genre and I like all of them but the concentration on one form makes for a better reading experience. It does mean that I have to read other "best of"s to cover those other areas but I regard that as a plus. The other reason I like this collection is that the editor's taste matches my own so well. Number 11 is a particularly fine example of this series and it includes a number of short short pieces which were published in Nature. I have already read these pieces on-line but it is nice to have them in a printed form. Despite spending a good chunk of time over nearly three decades looking at computer screens I really don't feel comfortable reading fiction on-screen. Anything more than a couple of screens full is too much and I have to print it off.

These thoughts reminded me that I had not gone back for a deeper look at New Ceres after its launch last week. The notion of a shared world magazine is interesting. In theory it should work better than a single themed collection because the episodic nature gives the writers and editors a more flexible platform for ensuring that the stories fit the parameters. Since they were only a screen or two, I did read the parameter setting pieces on-line and they do seem very nicely done. But to read the fiction I decided that it needed to be printed out

These thoughts reminded me that my printer is not working. It isn't dead, it just does not print anything readable so it is probably just the ink cartridges. So I spent quite a bit of time fiddling with head cleaning routines before I popped the lid and had a go at manually cleaning the cartridges. A little messiness ensued but I did get the black cartridge working properly. The colour one, despite being almost full, is stuffed and I guess I will have to shell out for another one. But black is sufficient for printing stories so now I have them waiting for me and I have the good feeling that you get when you make something work.

These thoughts reminded me that I have been having some problems with bit-torrent downloads making them noticeably slower than they should be. I had previously worked out that an update notifier was causing the problem. I could kill the process but it would come back again. After a bit of on-line research I'm pretty sure it isn't a virus - just a badly written piece of code. So this morning I went hunting in the registry and killed that process properly. I don't think it will be back. This means my download of Daria season 3 completed quickly. My thanks to those on my flist with Daria icons who reminded me what a good show it is and prompted me to get hold of it again.

These thoughts reminded me that I had a DVD that I bought the other day which does not play in my DVD player nor in my X-box. It does not appear damaged but it does not work. The question was whether to take it back on the way home from my trip into the city this morning. Normally I would but the disk only cost $5 and the place I bought it from is a bit out of my normal route. In trying to decide I though I would make one final check to see if it works on the computer. And it does. I am at a loss for an explanation but one viable platform is enough.

These thoughts remind me of the other places I have to go to today which are bookstores. Yes I bought several more titles to add to my to-read shelf. It never stops. See how my life starts with books and comes right around to them again.
