Spreading the weight
Oct. 9th, 2006 04:44 pmIt is a good feeling when you achieve something in an area that you don't expect to. I do not consider myself a very practical DIY sort of person. Sure I can handle a bit of simple sanding and painting but actually building anything is another matter. The other day I noticed that the legs of my computer table were digging into the carpet. Given time there would be permanent damage. So on my trip to the Hutt this morning I went shopping for those rubber foot things that you used to see to protect carpet in just this situation. I looked in hardware stores, furniture stores and even in the $2 shops. I looked for alternatives. All the item has to be is about 5 sq cm, flat, rigid and not brittle. There was nothing that I could see that would do the job. So when I got home I went looking through the crap that has accumulated in my back room and found a bunch of stuff that I could assemble to do the job. Not only did I have a plan but I was able to execute it in a way that made the result not only work but look good too. I would have been happy with ugly but effective. It was only a very small job but I feel really good about it because I didn't really expect to be able to do it. You could extrapolate this to a life lesson I guess, but I'm just happy with the glow of achievement.
