The volume count software at my ISP is broken. It is not keeping track of how much I am downloading and therefore does not know whether I have hit the monthly volume allocation for my account type or not.
Should I:
a) Just keep downloading as much as I can.
or
b) Tell everybody I know who uses the ISP.

In other, related news, the new version of Firefox has a built in spell checker. No excuses for dumb typos in lj replies now.

All you really know is that the usage reporting tool that you use to tell you how much you've used is broken. You can't know for sure they aren't counting your packets. Or that they can't go back through the raw logs and re-calculate your usage over the month.

Meanwhile I've changed plans with my ISP so I get downloads "as fast as the wire will permit" and a cap of 15GB a month. Unfortunately so far, "as fast as the wire will permit" turns out to be less than under the old plan.

The plan I'm on is set up so that the line speed is throttled back to dialup speeds when you go over the cap. They also send you an email to that effect. I have used way more than my cap and there is no throttling back and no email. The current plan is fixed fee only - there is no additional charge for going over the cap so even if they do go back over the logs, I am not going to get hit retrospectively for the volume.

I am moving to a similar plan to you from next month. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

In my case I applied for my new plan on the 26th, and got it the next day. Is it possible that you are already on your new plan?

Possible but the notification said that it would start on 2/11 - the start of my billing month. I can't see that accounting for why the usage reporting tool is not updating, although I suppose it is feasible if the software gets "confused".
