Not the actress
Dec. 29th, 2007 04:09 pmI was going to do a little photo essay of the journey down to visit my cousin for what was a very enjoyable family occasion. I thought I'd play on the cliché of not appreciating the worth of something until you lose it. I could go on about how I never properly appreciated the scenery that was virtually at my back door when I was growing up. But then I got caught my an even more negative cliché - the one that goes along the lines that you just cannot properly capture the essence of something in a mere photo. Well not with my photographic skills and not something built on the scale of the Mackenzie country.
I offer the following by way of example. This is Aoraki-Mt Cook as seen from the bottom end of Lake Pukaki. It makes a pretty picture, but it does not convey in any way just what a magnificent experience actually being there and taking it all in is. I don't have the words to properly indicate just how big the experience gulf is - but because people have tried, all the adjectives I might use have become cliché too.

This probably serves as a reminder that human scale photographs are much more effective. If you do want to see more shots like this though, I have put the others up on my Flickr account.
A footnote though about my first cliché impulse. I took this shot from the car on the way back. It is taken just a short distance from the farm where I was raised and gives you a pretty good idea of the countryside that was my stamping ground in my youth. Total travel time from the above picture to this one - just over one hour.
