A present for all those Aussies who ask me to say "fush and chups".

It appears that New Zealanders sound like Neanderthals.

Or at least that is what the article says. As noted in the comments "absolutely no evidence linking the quantal hallmark sound, or lack thereof, with the New Zealand accent." But it makes for a good headline?

For a while there was a theory that Neanderthalers were brighter than Homo Sapiens. If you claim the accent, you probably ought to claim the intelligence too.

Since I've already quoted from the comments to that article, I note another

"And, for the record, Neanderthal humans were gentle and loving people with a richly developed culture. They just called each other 'bro' a lot"

Nice one, bro. :)

I bet that Neanderthals knew the difference between bit and beat when said by each other same as Kiwis... it's just the rest of the world that can't figure it out.

For the record, I have to defend all accents because mine will adjust to suit any country within a week of arriving. AND I'll get shit for a week of getting back from anywhere, so everyone everywhere gets an opp to give me shit. They fink that's well good fun.

I hear my accent adjusting when I'm away - but it never does it completely - I just become more incomprehensible to everybody.
