Dave Freer sent me a link to Darwin's Evolutions an online short fiction magazine. Its of the funded by sponsorship and donations model which means you can look for free.

Did I hear somebody groan "not another one" and a plaintive "I don't like reading online". It may even have been me. Yet, I have no doubt that this is the way more and more good quality work will be published and we better get used to it. Stories want to be set free to be read. This is one of the ways that happens. In any case, I am getting quite used to reading online (thanks [livejournal.com profile] girliejones for making the case and therefore making me persist).

Besides which, it has a story by Dirk Flinthart, so it has gotta be good.

Somewhere in the bumpf I saw that said e-zine was available in paper form, but I have yet to go through every link to find the print version. Or I imagined it.

I find paper so much easier to handle. I echo your "I don't like reading online". I do too damn much of it for work.

I suspect theassociation online=work is part of the problem that one needs to break to enjoy online fiction.

Still a way to go, but I'm getting there.

Well I am taking ebooks with me and that will be a first for me if I read a book onscreen.

Working out the kinks on both our print-format and audio versions. Looks like those file formats and the PoD stuff will lag the on-line versions by about a month until we get re-usable formatting templates set up.

That is probably one aspect of it; but another part is the reading can only be done at the PC or laptop, which means that I can't do it in the comfort of an easy chair and me sprawled as a cat heating object.

The availability of a PoD format would be good - I have just committed to a two-year subscription to ASIM, so I should do Darwins the same courtesy.

I wonder if New Ceres has a PoD format?

You may find New Ceres is a bit of a painful subject in terms of the online presence. Look to there being a print anthology sometime next year.

Likewise, that is a barrier for me too. I expect the technology for that to get dramatically better very soon - evidence of super lightweight devices with good quality screens is already turning up.

I wonder what the medium term impact on our eyes will be of looking at those portable screens. Probably the same as looking at computer monitors - bugger all.

Given that the screens will be modern low emission ones and that they will be replacing the reading of sometimes small fuzzy print on crappy paper in often less than optimum lighting you might even argue that it is a positive.
