Cold and Dark
Jul. 9th, 2005 08:40 pmThere was a documentary on the history channel today on secret passages. The programme was rubbish but it did get me thinking about the fascination with secret passages and caves. Part of it is fascination with mystery and intrigue while part of it, particularly caves, is probably subject to all kinds of Freudian analysis.
Regardless of that, it did send my mind back to my youth on the farm. We had two small caves there. I liked to play in them when I was small although my parents were a bit nervous about the idea. The thing is that they were very small - as in narrow. I remember, one day, going up into the hillside plantation where one of the caves was. I dropped down into the first chamber and tried to move into the next chamber which was the cave proper. I couldn't do it. I had grown too large. I trooped all the way over to the other cave, but I didn't fit in that one either. I don't recall being sad - just annoyed.
Of course I'm much bigger now. Much much bigger. I wonder if they even look like caves now or just holes in the ground.
