Liquid bread
Jun. 27th, 2005 10:44 pmThere is a theory that beer is as old as civilisation. Certainly the ancient Egyptians brewed a beer for the workers. You could even argue that having beer to keep the workers happy may contribute to the ability of rulers to rule and build a civilisation. Now we have iPods.
I think back to my younger days when beer came in two varieties - DB and Lion - pubs would only serve one or the other. Tonight, I went along to BIG with a few others to The Malthouse and we had a choice of maybe 40 different local beers on tap and even more in the fridges. I still am astonished by the change in the drinking culture in this country as far as beer is concerned When I first started going to pubs they were bland places designed to aid drinkers to get blotto as fast as possible. Tonight I was able to have a nice meal with the two beers that I could nurse along for the evening. Symptomatic of many other social changes over the years I guess but certainly contributing to civilisation.
