Finally got some info on the SFFANZ (science fiction and fantasy association of new zealand) AGM. This was held at Icon - the con you go to if you can't go to SwanCon XXX - over Easter. The good news is that there was a successful bid for the 2007 Natcon. Also good news was that it is Jess and Stephen who are going to organise it. They are determined, inventive and organised and most importantly have done it before. They organised Conspiracy in '97 and this one will be Conspiracy 2.

The SFFANZ board election was held at the AGM too. I am back on the board which I suppose is good news. The disturbing bit is that because Simon Litten stood down there was a vacancy - but nobody wanted to step up and fill it. There are all sorts of possible disturbing reasons for this:
  • FFANZ is a laughing stock and nobody wants to be associated with it
  • It is so much of a non-entity that nobody is inspired or even cares at all
  • All the cool people who could do the job were scared off by Orson Scott Card
  • There are no people who are capable of the job
  • There are no people who even think they are capable of the job
  • Expectations for board members are so high that people are afraid of the committment (I don't believe this one either)
  • The eight of us are doing such a good job that there is no need for anybody else
  • The negative kama of being seen to care in our "knock the tall poppy" culture stopped people
  • Everybody was asleep (I like this one best)
Hmmm - I wonder if a lj group for SFFANZ would help.

In the meantime I will cheer myself up by customising my journal settings
