Blast from the past time today. As I was on my way to work, I saw an XA series Ford Falcon parked beside the bowling alley in Petone. It was black with a white vinyl roof. Funny anachronistic thoughts of the '70s come to mind (the XA was new in '72 or '73).

You virtually never see two tone cars these days. Certainly never one with a vinyl roof covering. That particular luxury feature was current for quite a few years. I wonder if it had vinyl covered seats as well - that was much more common.

The colour scheme was very reminiscent of the old traffic cop colours. I don't think they ever drove XA Falcons however - not where I came from anyway. I seem to remember that they drove HQ Holdens.

The thing about the Falcon of that era is that it coincides with the time in my life when my classmates and I were very interested in cars but a bit too young to drive (legally). We spent many hours discussing which of the Aussie big three produced the best car. I seemed hugely important at the time. Many many years later something must have sunk in because actually own a Falcon these days. It probably has a disconcerting number of components in common with that one I saw today.

Edit: 5 minutes after writing the above I was exiting the car park and there in front of me was a VJ Valiant from about 1973. Spooky.
