William's times
Sep. 29th, 2005 08:33 pmFor this entry I originally wrote "recently there seems to have been an awful lot of stories set in the early 17th century". But then I had a *headhand* moment. The late 16th/early 17th century has always been popular. Well since Elizabethan times anyway. ;-)
The trigger for these thoughts was 1602 written by Neil Gaiman. Its a collected set of comics where the premise is that all the Marvel Superheroes were alive in the early 17th century instead of now(ish). Interesting thought and then you start to think how many of these guys Marvel have spawned over the years. Not to mention fitting in Liz,James 1st and the Spanish Inquisition. (Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!).
OK, Neil Gaiman can't actually write anything bad. Really. So he makes a pretty good fist of it. There are lots of interesting characterisations and a nice little story. But it felt cluttered. It needed a bigger canvas than 8 comics. Nice bit of fun though.
