Forests of the Heart is 300 pages of the very best Charles De Lint that I have read. It follows his usual setting of this world and a mystical parallel world. The world and the people in it are drawn in a detailed and complex way. In this case the larger than usual cast of characters becomes a set of distinct individuals each with their own unique relationship to the mystical. It is a wonderful piece of scene setting and world building - De Lint at the very top of its form. I was totally engrossed.

The thing is, this book is 500 pages long. The 300 pages build up to a critical event. A bad event happens and then the story changes abruptly. I had this "whoa what happened" reaction. It becomes about resolution rather than world building. Its still good but it isn't the same quality of the earlier part.

Even though the second part is well told, it still leaves a slightly flat feeling which it shouldn't because it really is very very good. Funny how the mind works like that. Well mine anyway.
