Note to Cory Doctorow: Don't mess up your interesting social prognostication with dodgy and non-matching fiction. You will avoid damage to your reputation. This observation comes as a result of reading Eastern Standard Tribe last night. The only fireworks were outside as my neighbours did their best to burn down my house in the most spectacular way possible*.
Actually, there wasn't much story at all, just a vehicle for a series of flashbacks designed to show off some prognostication, bright idea or whatever. Some of the ideas were bright. Some just silly. At least the book is short and the writing light. It was over before I had time to get really irked by it. Its a pity really. Doctorow is an important social commentator but I think he should keep to writing columns where they can impact the popular culture more effectively.
*Guy Fawkes is not my favourite time. I love fireworks - they are great fun, but in the suburbs with lots of flammable bush around they are just wrong.
