Back forward back forward

Many years ago when I was at University, I made money in the holidays by doing pruning work for the local forest owners. It was quite physical work involving cutting many thick branches every day. Over the last few days I have been pruning branches and cutting up some dead trees. Only a fraction of a day's work from those old days. But now my forearms are so tired I can barely lift them to the keyboard now. Such are the ravages of age and indolence.
Since there has been some rain to interrupt me, I have been watching the four film series of A Dance to the Music of Time. I really like these films - I thought I'd re-watch my rather grainy tapes again to see if I liked them enough to buy the DVD now that the price has come down. I think the answer is yes.
The films are an unusual phenomenon. They are different in many ways from the Anthony Powell books they are based - so different that apart from character names and a few incidents they are almost completely distinct. Yet despite that, they manage to evoke pretty much the same feeling as the books. It is as if they lifted the spirit and not the story. Not a bad idea at all as the originals are almost certainly unfilmable.
I also gained some small amusement from watching a few of the ads from these 5 year old recordings from TV. Looking at advertising is one window into history - even 5 years is an interesting interval.
