There was this funny bright thing in the sky today. I'm sure I have seen it before but it it must have been a long time ago. It was warm too. I was actually able to venture out of my cave and get some work done around the place. The light it gave out was good for reading too. So much so that I read The Scarlet Rider by Lucy Sussex today.

I have said it before but it is worth repeating. I really like Lucy's clean evocative prose style. I also like stories where the boundary between fantasy and delusion is blurred. Is it a ghost possession story or a story of strong identification. What is most certainly is, is a story about literary detective work - tracking down the anonymous author of a Victorian era novel. I guess the associations with another era are why the fact that the book was published 10 years ago totally irrelevant. I doesn't hurt that the type of activity being pursued in the novel is something Lucy is very familiar with - the knowledge shows through without being overdone.

It isn't perfect. I don't think the mix of European, Haitian voodoo and Aborigine culture and mythos quite balanced correctly but they were all integral to the story. Overall though, it was a pleasant way to spend a sunny day.
