There was some discussion a couple of weeks ago about national happiness rankings. The problem was that the list published last time had a weighting factor based on environmental footprint which meant that it was not an "absolute" happiness list. This one purports to be such (with some countries in a state of war excluded).

I repeat my assertion from last time that happiness for a Kiwi is to finish ahead of Australia.

To save you working your way through the alphabetical list, here are some of the notable rankings:

1. Denmark
2. Switzerland
3. Austria
4. Iceland
5. The Bahamas
6. Finland
7. Sweden
8. Bhutan
9. Brunei
10. Canada
11. Ireland
12. Luxembourg
13. Costa Rica
14. Malta
15. The Netherlands
16. Antigua and Barbuda
17. Malaysia
18. New Zealand
19. Norway
20. The Seychelles

Other notable results include:

23. USA
26. Australia
35. Germany
41. UK
62. France
82. China
90. Japan
125. India
167. Russia

The three least happy countries were:

176. Democratic Republic of the Congo
177. Zimbabwe
178. Burundi

Now that you have achieed perfect happiness by beating us in this listing, what is left? Spiralling misery? Doom? Moving to less happy Australia?

:-) yeah right - perfect happiness. We still have to knock Denmark off. Besides, if I moved to Australia I wouldn't be able to attend the wild food challenge (http://www.monteiths.co.nz/wfc/about_wfc.html) (this week). On the other hand, I would be able to enjoy all those oh-so-funny sheep jokes and then there is the joy of being asked to say "fish and chips" over and over.

I was rather thinking that this might encourage a few folks over this side of the ditch ;-)

We ask you to say 'fish and chips' because we know it makes you happy. We wouldn't do it out of cruelty. Sheep jokes, on the other hand....

A night's sleep later and I am feeling more relaxed with the world, so I can cheerfully report that I have never actually heard a sheep joke from an Australian. Brits on the other hand...

You do realise, don't you, that Australia actually has many more sheep than New Zealand.
