So it looks as if Pluto is going to be retained as a planet after all. Huh. I had just come around to the idea that it should be dropped down to a secondary category. It took ages to break my childhood conditioning and then opinion swings back again. I think I will wait a bit before giving any more thought to this - changing a view gets harder as you get older.

I don't understand how Pluto can be accurately classified as a planet given contemporary knowledge.

As far as I can tell, the decision has been based on public opinion. People have been told that there are 9 planets and they don't like the idea of change. I blame Disney - if they hadn't popularised the name with Mickey's dog then there wouldn't be all this problem.
