Have you ever watched one of those low budget SF movies where all the action takes place in a quarry. A desolate and blasted landscape - yes? If perchance you are planning that kind of look for your movie then you might want to consider setting it at Hells Gate. After you have had hot mud, you will never go back to cold rock.

The big atmosphere shot to open.

You might have to be careful of your actors in this landscape. Those small pools beside the sign are boiling very energetically. Instant poached actor foot.

Can't afford a full size volcano. How about one that fits in your garden.

O.O I had nightmares about Hells Gate as a child.

This what you get when you take a four year old to a place where mud boils.

It is a legitimately scary place. Still, you live in a city built on a bunch of volcanoes - you must have got over it somewhat.

I don't know if I ever really made the connection (at least not at a young age) between mud pools and volcanoes. When your daily view encompasses three or four volcanes it is really hard to see them as anything like scary.

But yes, I did get over it at some point, I've been back to Hells Gate and various other touristy attractions.

Volcanoes in Auckland. Major fault lines in Welly. Boiling mud in Rotorua. Familiarity makes us sanguine but I can see why the Aussies call us the "shakey isles".

LOL. Yes. We are a natural disaster waiting to happen. But it's little bit hard to be afraid when the mental image generated by the word 'volcano' is the pretty green cones you climbed all over on school trips. Or you know, a family day in the park. Likewise earthquakes are hard to get too worked up about when they happen on a regular basis.
