So there I was reading The year's Best SF 11 edited by David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer. I like this collection for a couple of reasons. First it has the focus of just being a Science Fiction collection. There are lots of other forms and labels in the wider genre and I like all of them but the concentration on one form makes for a better reading experience. It does mean that I have to read other "best of"s to cover those other areas but I regard that as a plus. The other reason I like this collection is that the editor's taste matches my own so well. Number 11 is a particularly fine example of this series and it includes a number of short short pieces which were published in Nature. I have already read these pieces on-line but it is nice to have them in a printed form. Despite spending a good chunk of time over nearly three decades looking at computer screens I really don't feel comfortable reading fiction on-screen. Anything more than a couple of screens full is too much and I have to print it off.

These thoughts remind me of the other places I have to go to today which are bookstores. Yes I bought several more titles to add to my to-read shelf. It never stops. See how my life starts with books and comes right around to them again.

My refrigerator has been making a lot of strange noises recently. It has become quite noisy - hisses, rumbles etc. Today it seemed to have stopped refrigerating. Erk.

I switched it off and on. It is now running, refrigerating and seems to be back to its original quiet operation.

It would appear that my fridge requires a periodic hard reboot. Who knew. I wonder what operating system it runs.
