Production test
Aug. 27th, 2005 10:15 pmMy new sofa arrived today. The old one has done many years of good service but it was falling apart and beyond repair.
To christen the new one, I kicked back on it and read Year's best SF 10 edited by Hartwell and Kramer. I do like these collections - there are a lot of good stories in them and this one is no exception. There are a couple of duds this time - about what you expect when varying personal taste is concerned. It also flows pretty well as a whole collection - better than the last couple but still not as good as the early ones.
One thing I did notice which I thought was odd was that there were a couple of stories which I would consider nearer fantasy than SF. The were others which don't really fit my personal "know it when I see it" definition of SF. Now in general, this isn't a problem for a collection from my point of view - it may even be a plus as I like variety. But Hartwell has always made a big thing of this being a Science Fiction anthology only and he reiterates that in the introduction. I find the variance in perception interesting.
