Some of the highlights of today's conversation, based around a bit of wikipedia surfing.
There are two major bodies which consider themselves the major authorities on the naming of the oceans. Only one of them officially recognises the Southern Ocean as a separate entity.
The Mediterranean sea has several times been cut off from the rest of the ocean system.
The Bosphorus is in effect a natural canal.
The Caspian sea is the largest landlocked body of water in the world. While it is salt water, the salinity is much less than the oceans.
The Aral sea is drying up because of the diversion of major rivers. It is also very polluted.
Lake Baikal is the largest volume of fresh (liquid) water in the world. It contains 20% of all the world's fresh water.
Great Bear lake is the largest lake contained entirely within Canada's borders.
