I opened the curtains this morning and immediately thought "good painting weather" and abandoned any other plans that I had. Days that promise clear skies all day have been much too rare lately. Long story short, my carport is now painted and looks much better for it. I also painted some sticky waterproof goo into a couple of potholes in my driveway to stop them expanding. Covered with some fine gravel, they look much improved too. What isn't improved are my clothes - I cannot believe how messy I have been.

You've always claimed that when you were actually doing chemistry, the bit you hated most of all was the lab stuff. You were never, you said, a very good practical chemist.

And that's why your clothes are now covered in paint. Chemists, by and large, know how to manipulate sticky, unpleasant fluids without damaging themselves. (Sometimes the sticky, unpleasant fluids might be dangerous sticky, unpleasant fluids. Under these circumstances, auto-darwination becomes a distinct possibility).

Having said all that, I must confess I often find myself in the same situation that you currently find yourself in; and for exactly the same reasons as well.

I used to get very good value out of a lab coat. Their primary stated purpose is to protect you and your clothes by intercepting all the nasty things. My lab coats had many holes from acids and strong oxidising agents not to mention many coloured stains. In truth I didn't cause most of the spills - as a teacher you will understand the type of student that leads to most of them occuring when I was a tutor in the teaching labs.

The usually unstated purpose of a lab coat of course is to say "I am a scientist" to the rest of the world.

I get that. Of course you are smart so that makes it easier. :-)
