There is a body of thought that a well armed citizenry is a bulwark against criminal violence. This logic is well demonstrated by the safety of citzens of Iraq, Somalia and Liberia where small arms are in wide distribution in the community and there is little crime - apart from homicide.
The arguments for against gun control can be rationally presented, but the proponents of both views, but especially the gun-friendly, tend to emotionally held opinion - and that can't be argued with, as emotion lacks logic.
